Going for Gold!

Losing weight can change your life and take you to places you've never been before. Have a look at the Tesco success stories and you'll see what I mean. For many of us it's about much more than just what the scales say, though that's a massive incentive. No, it's really all about much much more. As I shed the pounds I redisovered hidden dreams and hopes. Things I'd wanted to do, clothes I wanted to wear that I thought had gone forever. I re discovered running. I'd always really admired people who ran the marathon, always shed a tear as the runners hit the streets facing 26.2 miles. I never ever thought one day I might be one of them.
That was until I started on the Tesco Diet. Before that, the most I'd ever run was 5k. Gradually as I lost weight I began to run again. At first I did 20 minutes round the block in my brother's old gym gear (with a serious sports bra and good running shoes - totally essential kit especially with the extra weight to cart about!). Then gradually I ran longer and further until I hit my target weight and celebrated by buying some good running gear. By then I was up to 7 miles and registered for my first half marathon. Running the marathon is now becoming a reality - last week I registered to run the Edinburgh Marathon in May 2012. Gulp!
I know I'm not the only success story that has run to victory over the scales. Last Sunday Carol and I ran the BUPA Great Edinburgh 10K Run. That felt very special. Carol and I first met in London at the Tesco Success Story photoshoot (I hadn't expected to ever have a photo shoot either!). We kept in touch and always said we'd run together one day to celebrate losing weight. On Sunday, in a rather gloomy and wet Edinburgh we ran, as slim as we've been for years. Runners. Not dieters, not fat, just runners. Just like everyone else there. We will run together again and I'm looking forward to many more!
We're not alone! Look at the Race for Life Board and you'll see others who have gone from couch to 5K using the NHS guidance. Some of you have done the Moonwalk, Shine, giant toddles, swam, skateboarded.... Others have become international athletes.
As you go through your weight loss journey, listen for those secret and lost dreams. It doesn't have to be running. It can be whatever means something important to you. What hopes and aspirations have you let go of as you put on weight? Is there something you've always wanted to do? Something you thought had passed you by?
Take care
Sue
Hi Jules, wow that would be wonderful, good for you! I wish I could tell you what it feels like to run after years of struggling to walk. Maybe you could set a goal of doing race for life - walk or run or a bit of both. They have great training plans and support and it is wonderful to take those first steps in such a cause. Or pick whatever cause you like. Good luck with it all, let us know how you get on - maybe even start a blog! Go girl! Sx

Wow Sue,
You have so much get up and go. I love how you say losing weight will take us to places we have never been. I really would love to be able to run, even for a few minutes.
So maybe like you, I will start with just running around the block. Not sure what my brother will say about me using his gym gear thought.
I am sure I have and old tracksuit somewhere, but whether it fits me is another thing.
I have looked at the couch to 5k before so maybe it's time I tried it out.
Thanks so much for sharing your journey and it is wonderful to know I am not alone.
