Aerobic exercise burns more calories than resistance training, so is the best way to lose abdominal fat, according to researchers at Duke University Medical Centre.

The researchers, whose research was published in the American Journal of Physiology, say that is important to reduce visceral fat, as it is known, as it has been linked to coronary disease, diabetes and some forms of cancer.

Cris Slentz, lead author of the study, said: "When it comes to increased health risks, where fat is deposited in the body is more important than how much fat you have... our study sought to identify the most effective form of exercise to get rid of that unhealthy fat."

Mr Slentz explained that while resistance training was good for building strength and lean body mass, aerobic exercise is a "better choice" for those who are overweight.

The research revealed that aerobic exercise burnt 67 per cent more calories than resistance training did.

Camilla Swain, from Ecominds, a scheme run by the mental health charity Mind, recently stated that physical exercise, particularly in the outdoors, is beneficial to peoples' mental, as well as physical, wellbeing.ADNFCR-858-ID-800712125-ADNFCR
