Balanced diet is 'essential' when trying to lose weight
First and foremost is the need to maintain a balanced selection of food, to make sure you get all the nutrition your body needs.
Nutritionist and journalist Dr Norris advises that even if you go on a low fat diet, you must still ensure that "you're getting enough of the major food groups - protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates - as well as vitamins and minerals".
Foods such as oily fish and olive oil can help you maintain a good level of healthy fats without falling off the wagon. It is also important to make sure you're getting enough calories every day to keep your body in top working order.
Going beneath 1,100 calories a day can be dangerous to your health, as well as sending your body into fat-storing mode meaning you'll find it harder to lose weight.
