A new report published in The Lancet has calculated that 48 per cent of men will be obese by 2030, unless the government intervenes.

The report suggests that while it is ultimately the responsibility of the individual to decide if they want to exercise and what food they consume, the decision to eat unhealthily can be "automatic or subconscious" due to living in an environment that promotes fast food.

"Governments have largely abdicated the responsibility for addressing obesity to individuals, the private sector, and non-governmental organisations", the report stated.

Yet it warned that the so-called obesity epidemic needs government intervention and investment if the issue is to be reversed.

Dr Mike Knapton, associate medical director, described the predicted obesity figures as "deeply worrying" and stated that "obesity is a 'normal response' to our environment".

He is therefore suggesting that it is unsurprising that people are becoming obese if everyone lives in an environment which relies on cars and gives us cheap, easy access to unhealthy foods.ADNFCR-858-ID-800712117-ADNFCR
