More should be done to raise awareness of the negative effects that drinking too much can have on a person.

That is according to the British Liver Trust (BLT), which suggested moderate drinking as part of a healthy diet and nutrition plan could be encouraged by adding more informative labels to beverages.

Sarah Matthews, campaigns and media manager for the charity, urged the drinks industry to commit to schemes to include unit and health information on their labels.

She also noted that restaurants, bars and supermarkets have a responsibility not to promote excessive drinking.

"People generally do not recognise the risks to the liver posed by harmful drinking, obesity or viral hepatitis," said Ms Matthews.

"Approximately 60 per cent of people with liver disease in England have alcoholic liver disease, which, in turn, accounts for 84 per cent of liver deaths."

She was speaking after a survey by YouGov indicated that 22 per cent of adults believe they have in the past consumed more alcohol than they wanted to because of peer pressure.ADNFCR-858-ID-19649626-ADNFCR
