Bread packed with salt, research reveals
The study revealed that some bread does not have a label outlining its nutritional content making it difficult for people to make healthy food choices.
Victoria Taylor, senior dietician at the British Heart Foundation, said: "A lot of bread is clearly packed with sodium and because it's such a staple part of our diet, bread can end up significantly bumping up the amount of salt we eat each day."
Ms Taylor suggested that manufacturers have a responsibility to put colour-coded food labels on their products, as she warned that too much salt in the diet can raise blood pressure which is a risk factor for heart disease.
A recent study by the University of Toronto has suggested that an over-abundance of salt coupled with lack of exercise can be damaging to the brain of elderly people.
