While most Brits want to lose weight in the New Year, at least two-thirds are not planning on renewing their gym memberships next year.

Such is the main finding of a poll conducted by moneysupermarket.com, which found that Brits see the gym as an unnecessary expense as they plan to lose weight in other ways such as eating healthier food and exercising at home.

James Clarke, head of protection at the price comparison site, said: “Despite the indulgence of Christmas it seems gym membership is not high on the priority list for a New Year health kick as Brits look to cut costs.

“Joining a gym can be a huge financial commitment, and with many gym-goers admitting to rarely using their membership, it's important to consider whether their hard earned cash can be used more effectively."

The firm also found that plenty of consumers want to quit smoking in the New Year, while 13 per cent of respondents successfully kicked the habit last year.

Life coach Rasheed Ogunlara advised those who want to give up smoking to not put too much pressure on themselves.
