The majority of ready-made salads tested in a recent study contained more salt than a packet of crisps and one in ten had more than a Big Mac.

That is according to campaign group Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash), which tested some 270 salad and pasta dishes from various retailers.

Professor Graham MacGregor, chairman of Cash, said: "It is absurd that only six salads contain less salt than a packet of crisps."

He suggested that the results of the research meant manufacturers were far off helping the public to reduce their daily intake of salt to six grams, as recommended by the Food Standards Agency (FSA).

Katharine Jenner, campaign manager of Cash, said that women often choose salad as part of a healthy diet, although she said they may end up feeling "bloated and sluggish".

She implied that these may be symptoms of water retention caused by salt in salads.

The FSA published a document in conjunction with the British Meat Processors Association in 2007, which aimed to provide a guide to reducing salt for small and medium sized businesses.ADNFCR-858-ID-800043333-ADNFCR
