Cancer charity suggests cancer rates halved through healthy lifestyle
Dr Ian Lewis, associate director of research at Tenovus, referred to a study which showed that many people are unaware that being overweight is a risk factor for cancer.
Cancer of the breast, bowel and kidney have all been linked to being overweight, he stated.
He said: "There are a number of steps that people can take to help reduce their risk of developing cancer including taking regular exercise [and] eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables."
Limiting alcohol intake can also help reduce the risk of developing cancer, he suggested.
Figures released by the World Cancer Research Fund have revealed that British women are 17 per cent more likely than other Europeans to develop cancer by the time they are 75.
