Consumers to have sugar-filled Christmas
Research conducted on behalf of sweetener firm Pure Via suggests that many Britons will eat more than their fill of sugary treats and beverages, potentially consuming as much as 2,000 excess calories in a single evening.
However, 63 per cent of women involved in the survey admitted they were not concerned about the effects on their health.
Nutritionist Azmina Govindji told the Sun: "We all indulge in sweet and fatty treats during the cold weather but it is worrying to see such a high percentage of Brits, in particular 25 to 35-year-old women, skipping meals and replacing vital nutrients with sugar.
"If the nation continues with these unhealthy eating habits they could be carrying an extra 5-7lbs of weight into the new year."
Britons can avoid consuming too much sugar over the festive period by avoiding fizzy drinks and limiting their intake of cakes and chocolates.
Alcoholic beverages are also high in sugar, so dieters may want to make wine spritzers with sparkling water to reduce their intake.
