The type of food a woman eats while she is pregnant can influence the sex of her child, and those who have a diet rich in calcium and magnesium are more likely to produce a girl.

That is according to research from scientists at Maastricht University in Holland, who claim that women who want a girl should ban salt and potassium-rich foods from their diet.

A spokesman for the scientists said: "The results show that both diet and timing methods increase the probability of a girl – the impact of the diet being the most pronounced."

The research revealed that in addition to cutting out food such as bananas, women who want to conceive girls also need to have sex on a regular basis and not prior and after ovulation.

A prospective father's diet had no effect on the outcome of the sex of the baby, the researchers said.

Women who gain or lose excessive amounts of weight between pregnancies are at a higher risk of stillbirth, according to Dublin-based researchers whose work was published in the British Medical Journal in 2007.ADNFCR-858-ID-800055144-ADNFCR
