People who are concerned about type 2 diabetes should aim to keep physically active and watch the amount of fat they have in their diet.

That is the advice being issued by Dr Alison Jeffery from the Peninsula Medical School, who was commenting in light of research from the University of California which may point to potential new treatments for the disease.

Dr Jeffery said: "The mainstay of diabetes prevention is to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle and a balanced diet – particularly reducing the amount of fat we eat."

She went on to suggest that it is important for parents to monitor their children's diets from an early age as the Early Bird Diabetes Study has implied that diabetes risk can start from a young age.

Diabetes UK recommends that people eat three low-fat meals a day and suggests that each of those contains starchy carbohydrates.

It also advises people to reduce the amount of salt they eat to six grams or less per day.ADNFCR-858-ID-800702798-ADNFCR
