Making small changes in a person's activity levels, such as choosing to take the stairs rather than the lift, can make a difference to the number of calories burnt.

That is according to Dr Christian Jessen, presenter of Channel 4's Embarrassing Illnesses, who has suggested that people should tailor their exercise regime to their ability and the weather.

Dr Jessen said: "Just little changes ... add up to significant number of calories burnt ... it's a question of not overdoing it and choosing the right exercise for the time of year."

He suggested that people are more motivated to take up exercise and lose weight in the summer as they want to look good in less forgiving clothes.

The thought of having to reveal themselves on the beach was also a big incentive for exercising, he said.

People who are genetically predisposed to obesity can significantly reduce the chances of becoming overweight by taking regular physical activity, the Medical Research Council stated.ADNFCR-858-ID-800051399-ADNFCR
