Eating at night increases hunger hormone

Dieters should avoid eating their main meal in the evening, according to Aloysa Hourigan, nutritionist at Nutrition Australia, who explained the common error on MSN NZ News.

Ms Hourigan quoted research from the National Institute of Aging, which she said showed that eating late at night increased amounts of a hunger hormone which may encourage people to snack.

She said: "Overeating at night is probably the most common diet mistake of all ... eat three fairly equal-sized meals throughout the day, eating around 1500kJ to 2000kJ for each."

The research she quoted found that people who ate large quantities at night were more likely to snack in the evening and during the night.

A 2009 study by researchers at Northwestern University, Illinois, revealed that when mice ate when they would otherwise be asleep, they gained twice as much weight.

This was even the case when they ate the same amount and exercised as much as mice which ate at normal times during the day.ADNFCR-858-ID-800743034-ADNFCR
