The humble egg has been touted as the new 'superfood', and can play an important role in helping with weight-loss and dieting.

That is according to new research due to be published in the Nutrition and Food Science journal, which claims eggs are one of the most nutrient-dense foods available, the Telegraph reports.

People are advised to eat at least an egg a day to receive its low-calorie benefits of protein, vitamin D, vitamin B12, selenium and choline.

Dr Carrie Ruxton, lead author and independent dietician, told the news provider: "The health benefits of eggs would appear to be so great that it's perhaps no exaggeration to call them a superfood as they are one of the most nutrient-dense foods available.

"Eggs are not only low in calories but are packed with nutrients that are essential to healthy living. They are an ideal food at every stage of life, as well as being easy to cook and enjoyable to eat."

The study also states that each egg provides more than 20 per cent of the vitamin D recommended daily allowance, the Telegraph reports.ADNFCR-858-ID-19658013-ADNFCR
