An increasing number of people are resorting to plastic surgery in a bid to lose excess fat, rather than dealing with their relationship with food, which often lies behind weight issues.

That is the warning from Ann Finnemore, a hypnotherapist and stress manager, who has suggested that the psychological and emotional issues a person may have need to be addressed before they can lose weight.

She said: "Many cases of obesity are the result of emotional eating and often involve binges. This behaviour is usually associated with low self-esteem, anxiety and a feeling of not being in control of one’s own life."

Ms Finnemore said that surgery will not fix any psychological problems, so anyone who tries to deal with their weight problems this way will ultimately not be successful.

While taking a psychological approach to weight loss cannot be achieved quickly it will be "empowering and sustainable", she suggested.

Her comments come in light of a report by the BBC which showed that the number of people under 25 who have undergone weight-loss surgery in England has quadrupled in the past three years.ADNFCR-858-ID-800738379-ADNFCR
