A diet rich in fruit and vegetables is crucial to boosting male fertility according to one expert, after a study found less than half of a group of would-be dads were eating healthily.

Dr Allan Pacey said that those wanting to conceive needed to "eat a healthy diet" containing "five portions of fruit and veg a day," if possible.

The comments came after a survey of 500 men looking to conceive showed that only 41 per cent had adopted a healthy diet.

Dr Pacey, a senior lecturer at the University of Sheffield, suggested that it was "just a case of nudging men in the right direction," with dieting.

The male fertility expert called on improved education for men on the benefits of adjusting factors like diet in their attempts to conceive.

Alcohol remains a major stumbling block, with some 71 per cent of men surveyed still enjoying drinks as part of their daily diet.

Dr Pacey ranked smoking as the "number one" worst thing affecting male fertility.ADNFCR-858-ID-800744414-ADNFCR
