Flavonoid-rich diet good for diabetics
According to new research from the University of East Anglia, the results suggest that a flavonoid-rich diet helps manage the underlying condition.
The research, published by Diabetes UK, suggests that following such a diet can also help cut the risk of heart disease.
Professor Aedin Cassidy, who works at the university's Norwich Medical School department of nutrition, said that those eating such a diet were 3.4 per cent less likely to develop heart disease.
"These results are significant from a public health perspective because they provide further concrete evidence that diet has a beneficial clinical effect over and above conventional drug treatment," he said.
The research was based on a sample of 100 women suffering with type-2 diabetes, half of whom were given a flavonoid-enriched chocolate, while the rest were given a placebo.
Previous research suggests that women with the condition are 50 per cent more likely to suffer from coronary heart disease.
