Funding boost to get Britain's students moving
Figures show that just under three in ten young people at university participate in sport on a regular basis, despite the fact almost three-quarters would like to play more.
The cash injection will create accessible sporting opportunities with a view of increasing student fitness levels to three times a week.
Karen Rothery, chief executive of British Universities & Colleges Sport, said: "By encouraging participation now, we will be creating a nation of active people who will be great ambassadors for the next generation to come.
"Following the 2008 Beijing Olympics and Team GB's success, the nation saw an increase in bike sales and people taking up recreational sports like swimming and cycling."
A poll commissioned by the Department for Children, Schools and Families found that 47 per cent of five to 19 year olds in the UK do no organised weekly sport.
