A woman's diet during pregnancy can impact on the oral health of her unborn child, according to Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation.

Dr Carter suggested that it is important for pregnant women to eat a healthy diet and to maintain good oral hygiene throughout her pregnancy.

He said: "Good nutrition from the mother during pregnancy is important in order for baby's teeth to develop, and poor oral health during pregnancy has been linked to a variety of problems."

Women who fail to look after their teeth could be at risk of having a baby of low birth weight or giving birth prematurely.

His comments come in light of research by the University of Illinois, which suggested that bacteria carried by a mother could increase the chances of her child having cavities.ADNFCR-858-ID-800704621-ADNFCR
