Good diet in pregnancy vital for baby's teeth, research suggests
Dr Carter suggested that it is important for pregnant women to eat a healthy diet and to maintain good oral hygiene throughout her pregnancy.
He said: "Good nutrition from the mother during pregnancy is important in order for baby's teeth to develop, and poor oral health during pregnancy has been linked to a variety of problems."
Women who fail to look after their teeth could be at risk of having a baby of low birth weight or giving birth prematurely.
His comments come in light of research by the University of Illinois, which suggested that bacteria carried by a mother could increase the chances of her child having cavities.
