Nutritionists have sought to remind parents about the importance of a healthy diet for their children, as schools break up for the summer holidays.

According a survey seen by STV, more than half of parents across the UK admit that their children have a better diet during term time.

The figures, backed by the British Nutrition Foundation, indicated that 59 per cent of Scottish parents claim it is cheaper and easier to give their children less healthy food.

Alarmingly, 43 per cent of parents also said that they let their children indulge in junk food to keep them occupied.

With parents struggling to provide their children with healthy diets, added credence is given to nutritionists' claims that a large proportion of children will be obese in the coming decades.

A recent report by Foresight suggested that 25 per cent of children will be obese by 2050, along with 60 per cent of men and 50 per cent of women.ADNFCR-858-ID-800635997-ADNFCR
