If people want to improve their fitness and sports performance they should aim to eat carbohydrates, protein and vegetables in every meal.

That is according to Sarah Mills, registered nutritionist with Sarahmillsnutrition.co.uk.

Ms Mills said: "A healthy, balanced diet - high in carbohydrate, low in fat and rich in essential nutrients ... [will] provide energy, fuel for recovery, maintain muscle mass and provide plenty of vitamins and minerals."

She explained that in order to build muscle, people should consume enough carbohydrates to "fuel the muscles with glycogen".

Protein is also vital, she said, to "support muscle growth", and she argued that supplements are only necessary if a person is taking part in regular exercise for prolonged periods of time.

Graeme Hilditch, personal trainer and author, recently stated that eating a healthy, balanced diet can make the difference between winning or losing in sport.

He suggested that people should alter their diet depending on the type of sport they are doing.

For instance, he said that endurance events, such as cycling and long distance running, require a person to consume complex carbohydrates and performance in a sport such as boxing can be helped by consuming a protein-rich diet.ADNFCR-858-ID-800698602-ADNFCR
