People should be encouraged to grow their own vegetables and eat their produce raw, as it helps the food maintain its vitamins and minerals.

That is the advice being offered by Suzi Grant, nutritionist and author, who has suggested that it is easy to grow food, even if people only have limited space.

She said: "You can grow carrots in a pot ... raw beetroot and carrots are so much better for you than when cooked."

Ms Grant explained that raw food is also beneficial for those who have problems regulating their blood sugar levels, as cooking starchy vegetables releases its sugar.

Locally grown produce is also likely to be better in terms of containing vitamins, and she suggested that adding vinegar to the water the vegetables are cooked in will kill any bacteria.

In 2005, researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, revealed that those who ate a raw food diet weighed less and were healthy.ADNFCR-858-ID-800749365-ADNFCR
