People who want to look after their health should try and limit the amount of sugar they have in their diet.

That is the advice offered by Suzi Grant, nutritionist and author, who has suggested that it is "the work of the devil".

She said: "[Alcohol has] got really high sugar from the fermenting process, which upsets a lot of people internally and isn't great for diabetics or people with low blood-sugar problems."

Ms Grant suggested that consumers who want to benefit from the antioxidants found in red wine would be better off eating grapes, although she warned that they are full of natural sugar.

Alcohol should be consumed only in moderation, she said, and people should look for drinks which are low in sugar, such as vodka and dry champagne.

The National Cancer Institute states that red wine contains compounds called polyphenols which are believed to contain antioxidant and anti-cancer fighting properties.ADNFCR-858-ID-800774963-ADNFCR
