Obesity 'increases chances of developing breast cancer earlier'
The team, who studied 524 women, also found that being overweight increased the likelihood of developing breast cancer at an earlier age.
"This study proved that obesity - especially the most severe cases - is the most relevant factor in early development of breast cancer", the authors stated.
In addition, it was discovered that women who began menstruating between nine and ten years of age were at a higher risk of developing breast cancer.
The American Cancer Society has stated that the risk of developing breast cancer is increased in people who are either overweight or obese, particularly for women who have gone through the menopause.
It states that the link between breast cancer risk and weight "is complex", and suggests that people should aim to "maintain a healthy weight" throughout their life time.
