People who eat processed meats every day are more likely to develop pancreatic cancer than those who do not consume any.

That is the stark conclusion of new Swedish research, suggesting that it doesn't take a great deal to significantly raise the threat of this deadly form of cancer.

In fact, they found that a single sausage or two rashers of bacon a day, approximately 50 grams of processed meat, increased the risk of the disease by 19 per cent.

When the daily amount consumed rose to 150 grams, the increase in risk also jumped to 57 per cent.

Susanna Larsson, an associate professor at the Karolinska Institutet, where the research was conducted, suggested that pancreatic cancer has particularly poor survival rates, making a healthy diet all the more important.

"If diet does affect pancreatic cancer then this could influence public health campaigns to help reduce the number of cases of this disease developing in the first place," she said.ADNFCR-858-ID-801264662-ADNFCR
