Despite the increased prevalence of diets and healthy eating these days, many people are still consuming far too much sugar and salt.

That is the stark conclusion drawn up by Dr Carina Norris, registered nutritionist and author, who believes that daily targets for consumption of these substances are being exceeded.

She explained that eating too much salt and sugar is still a "problem", even though most people are now aware that these things are not good for them in large quantities.

"They probably even know that you shouldn't have more than six grams of salt per day, but it is all too easy to think 'Well I feel fine now, it is not hurting my health, I enjoy it, I like the taste."

She suggested that you do not have to cut out all salt and sugar to enjoy a healthier diet, but recommended learning how to buy and make foods that contain lower amounts in the substances.

"You actually have to make a bit of an effort to seek out healthy options. We have to make it easier for people to eat healthily, rather than just eating the default of eating what is all around us which often isn't that healthy."ADNFCR-858-ID-801227799-ADNFCR
