Performance nutritionist: Protein and carbohydrate supplements work
That is according to Laurent Bannock, performance nutritionist and sports scientist, who warned that while some are worthwhile taking, many supplements are not "backed up by science".
He said: "You've got your basic diet, keeping healthy and then the timing of [taking supplements] and using a combination of carbohydrates, fats and proteins."
Mr Bannock said that people partaking in sport may benefit from fish oil as he said it seems to aid recovery form physical exertion and can boost performance.
The Independent recently stated that "herbal medicines lack safety warnings", suggesting that they should be taken with caution.
It's assertion is despite new rules stipulated by the EU which calls for herbal remedies to carry warnings on its packaging.
According to the publication, there is concern as some herbal medicines can affect prescription medications.
