Personal trainer advises swimming and walking in pregnancy
That is the advice being issued by Louise Whyte, founder of Penelope Fitstar and personal trainer specialising in pregnancy and post natal exercise.
Ms Whyte said: "The most important advice is for expectant mums to listen to their body, exercise should make them feel good, don't work to exhaustion and ensure they stay well hydrated and get plenty of rest." She suggested that it may also be beneficial to try interval training, whereby people increase the intensity of their exercise regime for a short period and then rest and recover in between.
Weight training is also recommended as it can help build stamina for labour, she said.
Her comments come in the wake of research published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology showing a link between exercise in pregnancy and infant health.
The study concluded that the chances of a baby developing neurodegenerative diseases later in life are reduced if it's mother exercises regularly during pregnancy.
