Parents should try and ensure their children eat a balanced diet and swap meat dishes for fish up to three times a week.

That is the advice being offered by Peter Clough, technical director at Efamol Ltd, who has said that it is also important for young people to eat fruit and vegetables on a regular basis.

He said: "[The key to good nutrition in childhood is] a balanced diet, with all things in moderation ... steamed or poached rather than fried foods [and] reduced sugar and fat intakes."

Mr Clough suggested that, where possible, parents should aim to offer their children home cooked, as opposed to pre-prepared food.

By planning meals, it is easier for families to stick to healthy eating guidelines, he said.

His comments follow research by Efalex which has revealed that while 60 per cent of children believe that fish will "make them brainy", over 31 per cent do not like to eat it.ADNFCR-858-ID-800730629-ADNFCR
