Regular drinking 'affects weight loss efforts'
A poll of 1,000 adults, conducted by Opinion Matters on behalf of Drinkaware, revealed that 49 per cent of people plan to get fit and lose weight this year.
However, 71 per cent of those who made this new year's resolution admitted that they expected to break it.
The survey also revealed that 28 per cent of people want to tackle their levels of alcohol consumption, yet 82 per cent of those planning to drink less expect to fail.
Chris Sorek, chief executive of Drinkaware, observed that many people slip into old habits as a result of the pressures of daily life and a lack of willpower.
But he pointed out: "Although it can be easy to find an excuse to drink, there are plenty of reasons to cut down.
"Regularly drinking too much can affect your sleep as well as your efforts to lose weight."
Government health experts advise men to drink no more than three to four units of alcohol per day, while women should have no more than two to three units.
However, those trying to lose weight may want to consider cutting out alcohol altogether, or choosing lower-calorie options.
