According to the BBC, the Royal Society of Chemistry unveiled the toast sandwich. At 7.5 pence, the meal comprises a slice of toast surrounded by two slices of bread, something that was first promoted by Victorian food writers.

However, may be fearful of the meal catching on, as it offers little in the way of nutrition and – depending on the type of bread used – plenty of processed carbohydrates.

Dr John Emsley of the RSC suggested that it can help people cut down on calories, but only if people restrict themselves to one, as each toast sandwich provides about 330 calories.

"I would emphasise that toast sandwiches are also good at saving you calories as well as money, provided you only have one toast sandwich for lunch and nothing else," he told the news provider.

"You simply put a piece of dry toast between two slices of bread and butter, with salt and pepper to taste. I've tried it and it's surprisingly nice to eat and quite filling."

While it can be tempting to try and reduce your spend by changing what you eat, there are health dangers to eating too many foods with a high glycaemic index (GI), such as white bread.

According to US scientists, people with low GI diets are less likely to suffer from age-related loss of sight. ADNFCR-858-ID-801214680-ADNFCR
