Brides desperate to lose weight before their big day are more likely to gain it back after just six months, a new study shows.

Of 350 participants in research by Flinders University, Australia, the brides-to-be overwhelmingly confessed to being on a diet, aiming to lose on average nine kg, about 20lbs.

Dr Ivanka Prichard monitored their weights one month prior to the wedding date, and then again six months after.

Almost half lost weight for the big day, between one and two kilos, but the study found that those who felt the most pressured to get skinny had gained back the most weight after the nuptials were over.

"My understanding of the situation is that they are restricting their eating and also exercising before the wedding, then afterwards it was as though it didn't matter any more,” Dr Prichard said of the findings.

This may lead to a dangerous cycle of yo-yo dieting, which puts the body, and the bride, under unnecessary stress.

Lose weight the healthy way for your perfect day, with a well structured diet such as a low carb or low fat plan.
