The idea that cosmetic procedures such as liposuction and tummy tucks can help adults lose weight is a myth, according to experts.

Shami Thomas, spokesperson for Transform, said that surgery would complement diet and fitness plans but will not offer a weight loss solution.

She explained: "There's a big misconception out there that cosmetic surgery can make you thin. It can sculpt and shape your body better but you really need to include diet, exercise and a good lifestyle in your plan."

The comments follow new findings from Goodsurgeonguide.co.uk, which show that 56 per cent would rather shed pounds by having weight loss surgery than eating less and exercising more.

According to the study, women tend to feel a stronger bond with food than men, with 61 per cent admitting they find comfort in eating.

Recent statistics from the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reveal that the number of surgical procedures performed last year exceeded 36,400 – a rise of 6.7 per cent from 2008.
