Drinks are often ignored when trying to lose weight, but new research by the University of North Carolina in the US should make you take extra care with your beverage choices.

We all know soft drinks are full of fat and calories, but now there are warnings about replacing the calorific cans with a diet version.

Instead you should try to consume more good old H2O.

Obese patients, studied during a six month trial, who drank diet beverages had consumed more carbs and sugar, and were more likely to have a higher daily calorie intake than those drinking water.

Another study undertaken at Purdue University, Indiana, discovered that the artificial sweeteners present in low calorie soft drinks can make it harder for you to regulate your food intake.

When tasting the sweet drink, the body expects a lot of calories, leading to confusion and over-eating when they don't come.

Water is not only calorie free, but drinking it can keep your metabolism running nice and quick, ensuring you burn off those extra pounds.ADNFCR-858-ID-800757878-ADNFCR
