Sue finds a diet that works

Sue had never been on a diet before, but as she got older the full impact of the bad food choices she was making became increasingly apparent. Frightened of the looming prospect of growing old before her time, Sue decided to take action against her weight. She registered for the Total Wellbeing plan, lost 3 stone 7 lbs, dropped 4 dress sizes and changed her life.

Sue shares her story with us…

Did you ever try a diet before?
I’ve never been on a diet. I used to maintain my weight by exercise, but I couldn’t keep it up because I became the main carer for my elderly parents. My back also gave in and I couldn’t exercise so things got out of hand.

Was your weight causing you any problems?
I had bad back pain and I was on pain killers. I had chronic indigestion, hot sweats and early menopause symptoms. I was wearing awful clothes - I was really starting to hate my body.

Tell us about your diet before you joined us?
I used to eat the same amount as my husband. We often had 3 courses as a matter of routine and we ate lots of rich food and drink. Now we stick to healthy meals and we also eat quite a lot of vegetables, but that's allowed! I was amazed by the amount of calories slipping by me unnoticed, because of my nibbling.

Did exercise play any part in your weight loss?
As I lost weight I gradually got back into exercise. I have kept up yoga and pilates. Exercising has been inspirational and I am fitter now than I have been for at least 20 years. I am even considereing doing a marathon, something I thought I’d never do.

What difference has losing weight made to you?
I am happier, healthier, more fun, younger in spirit and I feel like I have regained lost years. For the first time in my life, I know I can control my weight. It’s in my hands and up to me. I can put my arms around my husband and he can put his arms around me. Going on this journey together, helping each other along, has made us even closer.

What did you think of the service overall?
The meals were delicious and filling, they re-educated our eating habits and taste buds. I never realised just how many calories and fat I was packing away day after day. The support staff were great too giving advice and helping me through the difficult first few weeks and I loved getting the rosettes for doing well.

How have your family and friends reacted to your weight loss?
They’ve been great and no one has pressured us to eat or drink more than we want. They have been pleased for us both and we’ve inspired others to have a go.

Have you any anything else you would like to share with new members?
Do whatever works for you. Bin those fat clothes when they don’t fit. The first couple of weeks were scary, so stick with it and you’ll soon get used to it. I can’t tell you how wonderful it was to pull on a pair of size 10 jeans and to see the look of surprise in peoples' faces. It is thrilling and worth every craving that you have to withstand.
